THE COONAWARRA CUP BRINGS CROWDS TO THE PENOLA RACECOURSE!!
Forty one degree heat did not stop spectators and betters alike from attending the 27th Annual Coonawarra Cup on Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Penola Racecourse.
The Coonawarra Vignerons hosted 700 guests from all over Australia, along with many locals, to a catered breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, complimented with an abundance of Coonawarra wines in their marquee. Keeping up with the tradition of decorating the marquee with a certain theme, this year the Coonawarra Cup Committee was turned into the United Nations as “Flags of the Wine World” surrounded guests along with themed decorations and clothing.
Throughout the morning, the Vignerons hosted an Imperial Coonawarra Wine Auction with 12 Imperials (6 Litres), going across the block. These special bottles were packaged and bottled exclusively for the Coonawarra Cup. Betting enthusiasts were not left out as there was also a Calcutta Auction with the 1st prize winner taking home over $6,300.
Chairman of the Coonawarra Cup Committee, Mr. Ian Hollick said “The Coonawarra Cup is one of the most successful and longest running Country Race meetings held in the country, and we look forward to holding it each year. With every Vigneron in the district helping to stage the event, it is very much a community oriented day.”
People raced to place their last-minute bets on their favourite to win the Coonawarra Cup. The crowd cheered as Jason Lyon rode the Sam Turner trained “Sandhill Prince” to victory!
